GENERATION #3 - MARTHA ALICE GILBERT MULLINS - MARTHA WAS BORN 12-04-1886 ON SOURWOOD MOUNTAIN NEAR CLEVELAND, VIRGINIA. SHE WAS THE YOUNGEST CHILD OF JOHN CUMMINGS GILBERT AND ELIZA CRABTREE GILBERT. SHE MARRIED GEORGE N. MULLINS ON 7- 21-1903. THEY MET WHEN HE WAS WORKING CUTTING TIMBER NEAR WHERE SHE LIVED. HE WAS STAYING AT A BOARDING HOUSE AND HE WOULD SEE HER GO BY. HE ASKED THE LADY WHO RAN THE BOARDING HOUSE ABOUT HER. HE WROTE HER A NOTE ON A SHOEBOX LID AND ASKED IF HE COULD COME SEE HER. THEY LIVED IN DICKENSON COUNTY, VIRGINIA NEAR CLINTWOOD MOST OF THEIR MARRIED LIFE. GEORGE WAS BORN 6-1-1879 AND DIED 3-24-1959. MARTHA DIED 7-13-1986. THEY WERE MEMBERS OF LITTLE HOPE OLD REGULAR BAPTIST CHURCH. THEIR CHILDREN WERE MYRTLE, GLENN, ETHEL, BESSIE, FLORA (GENERATION # 4), EVERETT, RAYMOND, GEORGIA, AND ALICE. GLENN, RAYMOND, AND BESSIE DIED WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG. GEORGIA IS STILL LIVING AND LIVES NEAR JENKINS, KY. ALICE LIVES NEAR CLINTWOOD, VA.. MARTHA WAS A REMARKABLE WOMAN WHO WAS LOVED BY ALL WHO KNEW HER. SHE WAS A WONDERFUL CHRISTIAN LADY WHO HELPED THE SICK AND THOSELESS FORTUNATE THAN HER. SHE WAS A GREAT COOK AND LOVED TO QUILT AND LOVED FLOWERS. GEORGE AND MARTHA ARE BURIED IN THE FAMILY CEMETERY NEAR CLINTWOOD, VA., THE ABOVE PICTURE WAS MADE ON THEIR WEDDING DAY.

GRANDMA MARTHA'S RECIPE FOR APPLE DUMPLINGS
GREASE A CAST IRON SKILLET. MAKE DOUGH UP AS YOU WOULD FOR BISCUITS. SEPARATE DOUGH INTO ROUNDS. ROLL OUT EACH ROUND AND PUT THINLY SLICED PEELED APPLES IN THE CENTER OF EACH. SPRINKLE WITH CINNAMON AND SUGAR. ROLL DOUGH AROUND APPLES AND SEAL. PUT IN SKILLET. SPRINKLE ON MORE CINNAMON AND SUGAR. GENTLY POUR BOILING WATER OVER APPLES JUST TO COVER.BAKE AT 350 DEGREES UNTIL BROWN. GRANDMA SAID SHE USED TO MAKE THESE FOR GRANDPA WHEN THEY WERE FIRST MARRIED.
